Teach yourself to sing in 2020

We are coming to the end of the year. Oh wait. We are in fact very close to end the decade. Welcoming the new decade with a new resolution is a perfect way to kickstart the year. Picking up a habit that helps us in enhancing our lifestyle for good and leading a more meaningful life is what we should be looking at.

To add colour to the new year 2020, try Singing as a hobby. Singing classical ragas from Hindustani Classical and Carnatic Classical helps us psychologically, physically and in improving communication and in social behaviour. Crooning the ragas and learning to sing them can be soothing for the soul, mind and the body. Now imagine what it can do to a person as a whole. Singing helps in attaining a fulfilling journey of understanding emotions, sound, health benefits attached to each raga, enhancing focus and regaining concentration.

Some perceive picking up music as a hobby or singing in particular as a hobby as a daunting task. It’s not. Because there is help available in answering the doubts we attach to anything before we even start. Some of the doubts that cloud our mind especially in picking up a hobby like singing are:

  1. Am I gifted with a good voice?
  2. What do people think or criticism that comes our way
  3. Do I have time
  4. Singing takes many years to learn
  5. Singing is usually learnt at a young age
KK has never undergone any formal training in music

Good Voice: Everyone is gifted with a voice. Making it sound good is on us and it can only be attained by practice.

Criticism: Singing doesn’t necessarily mean we perform in public straight away. We learn, practice and go on to perform among family or friends before we get on to that stage. Family and friends are always supportive and their feedback are positive. This helps us to get more confident and of course practicing right is the cornerstone of becoming good at singing.

Do I have time?: We all have to make some time for ourselves. If we deduct some minutes from all the activities we are already indulged in, we can make time to allot to a new habit forming process. Practicing singing require 10-20 minutes a day and to make that time is never a big ask.

Singing requires many years to learn: With Riyaz app that is backed with feedback system, evaluation processes, fun and engaging way of learning and with its curated bite-sized content, it doesn’t take many years but helps in becoming a professional in a year or two.

Singing is usually learnt at a young age: Yes it is learnt at a young age but it doesn’t mean one shouldn’t attempt picking it up as anyone at any age can learn singing. In fact, adults can learn faster as the developed brain helps us to learn the nuances and techniques better than at a young age. Singing can be learnt at any age.

Habit building is easy. Starting a new habit is a small beginning. Repeating it daily and making it work for us is what makes the habit stay with us. As James Clear, Author of Atomic Habits: An Easy and Proven Way To Build Good Habits and Break Bad Ones, puts it

“All big things come from small beginnings. The seed of every habit is a single, tiny decision. But as that decision is repeated, a habit sprouts and grows stronger. Roots entrench themselves and branches grow. The task of breaking a bad habit is like uprooting a powerful oak within us. And the task of building a good habit is like cultivating a delicate flower one day at a time.”

Come, let us all join the singing revolution and make 2020 a musical year in our lives. Start singing now on the Riyaz App.
