Know your nottuswarams

Nottuswarams are the small songs which resemble western melodies composed by Sri Mutthuswami Dikshitar in the language Sanskrit. They are among the first songs learned by Carnatic music students. The nottuswarams in this course are all in Raga Shankarabharanam, which has all the seven notes.

This course consists of the following learning and practice modules.

1. Get to Know the Tanpura
2. Notes and scale of Shankarabharanam

Introduces the notes and scale of shankarabharanam with its arohana – S R2 G3 M1 P D2 N3 Ṡ and avarohana – Ṡ N3 D2 P M1 G3 R2 S.

3. Exercises for practicing notes, scale and song phrases

Provides audio exercises to practice the concepts you have acquired in the previous module.

4. The Concepts of Raaga and Taala
5. Rama Janardhana

This is a nottuswaram in raga Shankarabharanam set to eka tala, dedicated to Lord Sri Rama. The notes in this song are in middle octave and does not have any lower or higher octave notes which makes easier for the beginners to learn.

6. Shakti Sahita

This is a nottuswaram in raga Shankarabharanam set to adi tala, dedicated to Lord Ganesha. It was composed by Sri Muttuswami Dikshitar. The lyrics is in the language Sanskrit.

7. Beat with Four Notes
8. Shyamale

This is a nottuswaram in raga Shankarabharanam set to adi tala , dedicated to Goddess Meenakshi. It was composed by Sri Muttuswami Dikshitar. The lyrics is in the language Sanskrit.
